The health-AI oversight gap, finally quantified: 106 systems deploying AI, 26 with a governance body, 16 disclosing to patients
Nurse.org's Nursing AI Watch analysis reports that every one of the 106 large health systems in its database is deploying AI somewhere in care, while only 26 have a named AI governance body, 16 publish a patient AI-disclosure policy, and 12 have a confirmed chief nursing informatics officer; among the 31 governance structures documented in detail, six show a named nurse leader shaping how AI is governed. The authors describe these counts as conservative floors drawn from the public record rather than survey responses. Those four metrics work as a free public maturity rubric — governance body, patient disclosure, nursing informatics leadership, and a named clinical owner — and patient AI-disclosure is the weakest one at exactly the moment state insurance statutes, EU transparency duties, and pending federal chatbot legislation are all converging on mandatory AI-interaction disclosure. The sample is large acute-care health systems rather than post-acute providers, and in skilled nursing and senior living the nursing-leadership finding sharpens, because nursing is the workforce and a clinical AI governance body without a named nurse owner has no operational owner at all.
